People connecting through video. Making video has never been easier. Now there is a home for the videos you make. Come on in.

Histoire

Vimeo is a video-centric social network site which launched in November 2004. The site supports embedding, sharing, long-term video storage, and allows user-commenting on each video page. Users must register to upload content. Registered users may also create a profile and upload small user pictures as their avatars. The main difference between the site and other competing video sharing services is that Vimeo allows only user-created videos, of a <i>friends and family</i> nature. No pornography, TV shows, music videos, movies or anything not created by the user can be uploaded.

As we ramp up to the Vimeo Festival + Awards, we find ourselves with a little global traveling to do. The IBC2010 conference is happening September 9th - 14th in Amsterdam, and Vimeo will be there in full force, so please drop by to say hello.

If you won't be attending, our ace reporters Andrea and Steve will be scouring the event space, finding the coolest news and products, and beaming them directly to you through the power of video. Keep watching this blog for links to their coverage, which is sure to be informative and self-deprecating (knowing Andrea).

While we're in Amsterdam, we'll also be hosting a preview event for the Vimeo Festival + Awards September 10th, where we'll be screening works from the shortlisted finalists and rocking out to the VJ talents of Eclectic Method. The response to this event has already been overwhelming, and we're maxed out on RSVPs, but for those who have already made it on to the list, we look forward to seeing you there.

If you aren't able to make it to the events above, you've still got one more opportunity to hang with us! The Third Annual Amsterdam FCPUG SuperMeet is happening September 12th, and we're excited to be able to attend. Previous SuperMeets in other cities have put us in touch with incredibly talented and friendly Vimians, and we're sure this one will be great, as usual.

Head over to supermeet.com for the full details. It's sure to be a good time.

Ok, with all of that information, it should be really easy to track us down and say "hello." We really hope you do, as we love meeting people from the community, getting your feedback, and working with you to make Vimeo better each day.

But wait, don't escape too far! You have to come back so you can check out this awesome group, too! It's called Very Short Documentaries. I bet you'll never guess what kind of videos you're going to find there. (There's a hint in the title)

And that, my friends, is This Week in Vimeo.

  • This Week in Vimeo! August 23rd

    Hey friends,

I have a confession to make-- I'm a bit of a voyeur. I'm curious about people, I'm interested in quirks, dreams, facial expressions, the way we dress ourselves, the kind of music we make, you get the idea. Frankly, I don't think any of us would be interested in videos if we were not interested in each other. For todays installment of This Week in Vimeo, I'd like to salute the Peeping Tom in all of us by showcasing a smattering of documentary, journalism and portrait-based videos.

First up is Boston-based photojournalist Kristyn Ulanday. I find Kristyn's work particularly poignant because of the grace with which she presents an unbiased look into her subject's stories. Her video, Homeless Not Helpless is a prime example of this.

The I Love People Channel is a treasure. It boasts a fine collection of every-day, documentary, and portrait style videos capable of coaxing even the most cynical of hearts into appreciating "The beautiful human race."

The Video Journalism Group proves that, "Working in the arena of television news as a videographer/editor involves a great deal more than just the technical ability to operate a camera. Above all it necessitates inventiveness, incorporating a creative eye for structure and storytelling. Strong, composed images can impress compelling reporting." I couldn't agree more!

P.S. You can now fan us on Facebook. Join us for access to exclusive contests and give aways!

  • Three New Features: Universal Player, Watch Later and Roku

Hey everybody, we have several great updates for you today!

Since we rolled out the HTML5 player in January people have been clamoring for an embeddable version, especially for iPhones and iPads. Today we're taking a big leap forward for compatibility and updating our embed code. We call it the Universal Player.

The Universal Player is as easy to use as the old embed code, just a lot more compatible. Instead of being a direct link to a Flash player the new Universal Player can automatically detect what kind of device is viewing the video and choose the optimum player based on the device's capabilities. For example, it will serve mobile video to iPhones and Androids and HD to iPads and Desktops. On other mobile devices it can use the native player of the device or an optimized mobile Flash player with bigger controls. It also allows us to introduce new players as technology changes, potentially allowing us to do things like serve HTML5 to IE9 and WEBM video to Firefox.

The goal is to make the Vimeo player experience as seamless as possible. No matter what device or website Vimeo embed code appears on your video will load, with the same level of privacy, customization and quality you've all come to expect.

We've also improved performance: the new player loads faster and should be less stuttery for desktop users.

Pretty great right? Before we move on, let's clarify a few things:

Q: How do I use the new Universal Player?
A: Starting today it is the new default embed code and is available via the embed button on any Vimeo video. Just copy and paste like any other embed code. This new embed code is available for any video, new or old.

Q: What about all the old embed code out there? Do I have to manually replace it with the new Universal Player embed code?
A: Yes, however we've built something to help. We've written a small Javascript snippet that you can add to your site to that will automatically upgrade old embed code. You can learn more in the FAQ. Every time a piece of old embed code is upgraded to new embed code, an angel gets its wings!

Q: Can I still use the old embed code? Will it stop working?
A: You can still use the old embed code and no, it will never stop working. You can switch to the old embed code in the embed popup.

Q: Will all my videos work on my mobile phone now?
A: Mobile versions of all your videos is still a Plus-only feature. So while now on an iPhone your videos won't appear as a blue box, it might not be playable unless you are Plus. If you are Plus, here is how you turn on mobile videos.

Q: Is the Universal Player HTML5?
A: The Universal Player is actually many players. Depending on the capabilities of the browser, it may use Flash, a native player, or HTML5. Starting today the Universal Player will work on HTML5 devices like the iPad and iPhone. Soon it will also serve the HTML5 player to desktop users.

    Q: What took so long?!?!
A: Video players are like a little garden: easier to build in your back yard than the middle of a highway. While it was relatively easy to build an HTML5 player that worked on Vimeo.com, making an experience that could live and work anywhere is actually a big undertaking. For example, we had to write several new video players to replace what used to be just one: behind the scenes there is a new Flash player, new Flash mobile player, new iPad player, new iPhone player, and new HTML5 player. And we expect to add more. It used to be you could rely on Flash to perform the same way everywhere, but now HTML5 and embed code act very differently from browser to browser and device to device. We've spent the past few months evaluating different options and testing quite a lot.

Q: What about the Moogaloop API?
A: We've written a Javascript library called Froogaloop that allows developers easier access than ever. Flash developers can still use the existing include method.

Q: This is using an iframe, aren't there sites that don't let you use iframes?
A: Yes, certain CMSs and social sites don't allow iframes. Facebook, MySpace and Wordpress are the most notable. However we are not discontinuing the old embed code and as long as you use the sharing buttons in the Share box or the auto-share, sharing to these sites will work. If you're using WordPress, we recommend the Embed Iframe plugin.

But that's not all! We're rolling out a second improvement to the player today called Watch Later.

How many times have you come across a video at work or school that looks interesting but you didn't have time to watch just then? Watch Later to the rescue!

Starting today, every Vimeo video will by default have a new "Watch Later" button right next to the Like button. Think of it like the Netflix Instant Queue: just click it and the video gets sent to a special album for easy access later when you have some free time. We'll also be adding the Watch Later album to the mobile site soon, perfect for the commute!

(Of course, Vimeo Plus users can turn this button off in their embed settings. We've defaulted it to off for all existing videos with customization. This button will not appear unless you want it to.)

    One more thing.

Today is also the first step for Vimeo in to a brave new world: your living room. We've teamed up with Roku to bring you Vimeo on your HDTV.

Vimeo on Roku is just awesome! Setup and linking your account is easy and you'll be stunned at the quality, especially if you're uploading in HD. You can easily access your videos, likes, subscription inbox, and Watch Later queue. We've also added the HD Channel, Staff Picks and the ability to play an entire set of videos with one click. It's truly a unique and affordable way to experience Vimeo from the comfort of your couch. Check out Roku to learn more. If you're already a Roku user, the Vimeo channel should be in the Roku store later today (it's free).

That's all for now. We've been working hard to bring you these three new innovations and sincerely hope they make Vimeo a better experience. Remember that most of this is just the first step, expect to see Vimeo support spread far and wide as we steadily improve support for new and exciting platforms.

    Enjoy!

  • The Chapter 7 Skinny

The box, the key, the cabbie, his daughter, the bear, the Feds and the mysterious organization seemingly behind it all: these are the elements that have kept us engrossed as the plot has unfolded in the Story Beyond the Still contest, brought to you by Vimeo, Canon and you.

This experiment has gone better than we could have ever expected, and the world has been so impressed by what the winning filmmakers have accomplished, that the contest earned awards for its success before it was even finished. Now you have one last chance to add your piece to the puzzle and be a part of something great.

You have until August 25th at 11:59 PM EST to submit your entry for the 7th chapter of the story. Make it bold, make it inspiring, and make it unforgettable. Your final image will be the inspiration for the final chapter, which is going to be created by all of the contest winners working together with Vincent Laforet. So make sure your short film ends with an evocative still photograph to guide them (not just a freeze frame).

Remember, each chapter winner receives their choice of a Canon 5D Mark II or 7D camera, along with a high-quality Canon lens, a full year of Vimeo Plus, and your airfare and hotel costs are covered when we fly you out to collaborate with Vincent and the other contest winners. Don't miss your last chance to win these awesome prizes!

We're looking forward to another impressive round of entries this month, and can't wait to see where this chapter of the story will take us.

    Game on!

  • We need your help!

The first annual Vimeo Festival + Awards is right around the corner. We're putting in a TON of work to make it the greatest experience in the history of mankind (or at least close to that), and we want to make sure that the Vimeo community is represented fully. That's why we need your help.

The Vimeo Festival will showcase the greatest minds and the most innovative work that we see on the web. In that vein, we are creating a special gallery space to showcase the coolest work that the Vimeo community has to offer. If you make mind-blowing installations, futuristic video technology pieces, or anything else that is fun and interactive that you think would shine in the Vimeo Gallery, we want to showcase it at the Vimeo Festival (NOTE: We are only looking for actual physical installations, not just videos). This is a phenomenal opportunity to come to the festival and have your work shown to thousands of people in the heart of New York City's gallery area in Chelsea, not to mention displaying your stuff to the Vimeo community in real life!

We are also looking to tap into all you insane graphic designers and creative types to make cool posters for the event. These posters can be anything from illustrations to photos to infographics - anything that embodies the creative spirit of Vimeo and the celebration of the Festival + Awards. Just make sure there is a Festival + Awards logo somewhere on the poster, that is the only criteria! We will use the ones we like the best to help promote the Festival + Awards on our own site, during the festival, and possibly in print. Of course we will give you tons of credit and give the artists we choose free passes to the event!

To submit your work for either the Vimeo Gallery or for posters, please email us at awards@vimeo.com with a detailed description or video of your work or the poster itself. The deadline for the posters and installation submissions is August 30th. Specs for the poster should be as large a file as possible (vector is best!) and in tradition poster ratio (24x36 inches).

The Vimeo atmosphere of unbounded creativity and technological innovation creates such a rich artistic environment on the site, and we hope you will help us to properly represent this segment of the community at the Festival. We can't wait to see your stuff!

  • This Week in Vimeo! August 9th

    Hola Vimeo!

It's true, the weekend is behind us yet again, but what's this?  Another is only five days away!  Let's celebrate with a trip down This Week in Vimeo lane.  I'll bring a picnic basket full of the tastiest eye candy.

Speaking of tasty, allow me to introduce you to food blogger and documentarian extraordinaire, Liza de Guia.  Liza's blog over at food. curated. explores some of New York's most interesting farmers and producers, including rooftop farmers, urban beekeepers, and everything in between.  Her passion for storytelling is absolutely apparent.  All of her videos seem to have one thing in common; they feature individuals who are passionate about what they're doing.

"I find that the food world has many people like this. People who fly under the radar, who devote 15+ hour days to creating something that makes them happyâbe it growing a crop of stone cherries or creating a homemade 'Snickers bar to end all Snickers bars.' They want others to enjoy what they put their heart into. I love that. And I use my craft to support it. Visually capturing the behind-the-scenes is important because I can help get them noticed. I can put them on the map a little more and play a part in their discoveryâand that makes me feel good. It's fulfilling!" (via Serious New York Eats )

Perhaps it's because I skipped lunch today, but I've started on a food theme and now I can't stop!  I implore you to check out the Foodmation Channel for videos featuring animations made withâyou guessed itâedibles!  I'm particularly drawn to Sweet Dreams by Kirsten Lepore, which tells the story of a brave little cupcake in a strange vegtastic world.

Well gang, now that I've got your tummies growling, allow me to leave you with a great little group featuring video recipes and how-to's for cooking.  Hop over to The Food Video Recipes Group and get started on your own kitchen adventure!

    Send me your leftovers,
    Katie

PS- If you're in or around NYC tomorrow night, we'd love to see you at our Vimeo Offline Event! We'll be Keepin' it Real at SPiNyc, located at 48 East 23rd Street between Park and Madison. For more information on the event, head over to this blog post. You can also RSVP right here!

    Hey Vimeans!

Starting today you can automatically publish your uploaded and liked videos to Facebook and Twitter. Just hop on over to your settings page to connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

    Enjoy!

  • Vimeo Offline Event: Keep It Real

Attention New Yorkers and nearby New Yorkers,

Tuesday, August 10 is the next scheduled Vimeo Offline Event. This one is especially near and dear to my heart because along with the amazing documentaries we're screening, it features my favorite type of Vimeo videos -- Everyday Life vids.

When I first joined Vimeo, I was immediately drawn in by the creativity of the people uploading to the site. At the time, we had 15 megs of upload space per week, and everyone contributed pieces of their lives through short, non-scripted videos and everyday clips. Many of us compiled, and thoughtfully edited together those clips to create vidblogs, or video diaries. It occurred to me as we were throwing around ideas for this Offline Event that these everyday life videos are a sort of documentary, personal documentary.

So we scoured the site for the most compelling documentary films and the absolute best everyday life videos and on Tuesday the 10th, we'll Keep It Real all evening. Come hang out with fellow Vimeans, get your drink and snack on with the Vimeo Staff, and watch the most original Vimeo videos on beautiful HD projectors at SPiNyc.

Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Come early to eat some food, enjoy our DJ, and get a good seat.

The event is free, but seating is limited so be sure to RSVP with our partners in crime, BFD Productions.

Poster tag credit goes to one of Vimeo's hotshot developers Sean Nelson!

  • Make a video, win a trip to Amsterdam!

    Hallo Vimeans,

I'm very excited about this hybrid Weekend Project/Contest because participating means you double your chances of winning something! Amstel Light teamed up with Vimeo to inspire you to share a creative narrative short film capturing how an open-minded approach lives in your town. Do you have a stellar art community, or an awesome underground music scene? How about some eclectic or eccentric characters in the community? Show us how your town is unique.

The coolest part of the Amstel Light contest is that the winner gets a round-trip ticket to Amsterdam to attend the Vimeo Festival and Awards event happening there in September. I'm going to be there, so you'll be in good company!

The winner of the Weekend Project will receive 2 extra gigs of upload space per week and free Vimeo Tshirt, or free Plus Account! The runner up will receive 1 gig of extra upload space per week.

To submit your entry in the "One Dam Good Town" Amstel Light contest, go to the Amstel Group page: http://vimeo.com/groups/amstel. Be sure that you read the Official Rules posted there. (Note that if you're not eligibile to enter the Amstel Light contest for some reason, you can still enter the Weekend Project.)

Be sure to also submit your video to the Weekend Project Group too, otherwise it will not be considered for the Weekend Project prizes.

Submissions to both the Amstel Light contest and the Weekend Project are due Aug 4, 2010.

Hope to see you in Amsterdam!

    Prosit,
    Andrea

UPDATE- The winner of the Weekend Project is Kurt Larsen's video, Relax...Everyone's Welcome! and the runner up is Session 7 Media with The Walking Pesos, Live from the Streets of Seattle. Thanks for your submissions everyone!

  • Don't miss your chance, only two days left!

Submissions for Vimeo's First Annual Festival and Awards have been pouring in, but one crucial entry is missing: YOURS!

We wanted to remind you that there are only two days left to get your entry in for your chance at fame and fortune. That's a Vimeo Award and a shot at $25,000 towards your next film. If you have premiered a video online between June 3, 2008 and July 30, 2010, you should be filling out your submission form right now. Don't forget that Plus users get a discounted entry fee. For the price of a cup of coffee, you could give a young video a chance at success.

Maybe you looked at the list of judges before and thought to yourself, "Yeah, those judges are amazing, but world renowned recording artist M.I.A. is not among them." Well now you are wrong, my friend! We've now got M.I.A. on board to judge the Music Video category, along with

-Lawrence Lessig judging the Remix category (this guy is THE expert on the subject)
-Paola Antonelli, who is Senior Curator at The Museum of Modern Art, which you've probably heard of
-Rian Johnson, Sundance prize winner and writer / director of some amazing films like Brick and The Brothers Bloom
-Ted Hope, Producer on over sixty films such as 21 Grams, American Splendor, Happiness, the list goes on

We are not playing around when it comes to these judges. We've lined up one heck of a panel, so now do your part and submit your work before it's too late. You can find all of the details and the submission form over at vimeoawards.com

    Good luck!

  • This Week in Vimeo! July 26th

    Hi Vimeo people!

I have a sad announcement to make: this is my last week working for Vimeo. It's been a great three years here, but I have to go finish college now! So, here goes my final This Week in Vimeo.

This week I would like to feature Vimeo user Scott Foley. Scott joined Vimeo in July 2008. He hails from Boston and sometimes Long Island, too. I don't know much about him other than he makes great videos and according to his Vimeo profile he sometimes feels like LL Cool J. Fair enough. Be sure to check out some of his work, especially his most recent video Burnt Drive Drive.

Over the weekend I came across this fun new channel called Tryptophanatic Netvision (try saying that 5 times fast). This channel features an eclectic group of videos ranging from tripadelic motion graphics to mind warping experiments. "Netvision is geared to alter your very being to a higher level of super hue-man exaltation and inspiration." Awesome.

As for groups this week, I would like to feature a group called Outdoor Artistry aka Street Art and Graffiti. This group is for videos involving street art and or graffiti. It has a great collection of cool street art from around the world. Take some time, look around!

Finally, don't forget that the Vimeo Festival and Awards is accepting submissions for the remainder of July, but that's less than one week away at this point. July 31st is coming up quick! For details please refer to the awards site.

    Love,
    Julia
